Strategies for paper

In class, we discussed some of the strategies that can be used in paper. Based on the list of goals in the Student’s Guide, there are some strategies which I think will be useful for the portfolio. The paper first has to meet the basic requirement such as format which is MLA guidelines and grammar. One paper can’t be good if there are grammar errors which might leads to confusion. Furthermore, using correct grammar and word choices will help writer meet the goal of creating coherence and clarity. Thus using correct grammar is one of the strategies which I think should be used in portfolio. Key terms are very important and should be repeated throughout the composition. Strategies which can be used to take advantage of key terms are title and first sentence. Addressing key terms in the title and first sentence will inform audiences what an essay is about. If writer succeeds in getting audiences’ attention by creating interesting title or first sentence, it will be easier to draw audiences’ interest to your paper. Controlling purpose is also very important. However, maintain controlling purpose throughout a paper is not easy. One way to do it is repeating key terms and using pronouns to refer back to the key nouns in order to avoid repeat. Although most of the goals in student’s guide are necessary for a qualified paper, there are some goals that writer might not necessarily use such as “use key terms, distinctions, questions, and strategies from one or more texts to understand, question, critique and/or frame other texts”. Writer will provide a better explanation and better information to readers by using more than one text. However, it is not always possible to use more than one text.
